Dear Friends of Mahler Academy!

Also in 2017 the Mahler Foundation wishes to pursue its intent and let well-talented young European musicians live the opportunity to participate in Mahler Academy, irrespective of whether they have sufficient financial resources or not.

To do that, and increase these opportunities, we’d need your help once again.

The planning of Mahler Academy 2017 involves - as usual - internationally renowned musicians such as Uwe Martin Haiberg, Volker Jacobsen, David Watkin as well as several members of Mahler Chamber Orchestra.

After the first wonderful experience occurred in 2014, once again we welcome with open arms Daniel Harding, who’s going to lead the Mahler Academy Orchestra in our symphonic project.

Your contribution was essential for the outcome of previous courses: for this reason, to realize a new enthralling Mahler Academy , we turn to you to promote the initiative “Adopt a Musician”.

We would spread it with the aim of receiving the highest number of donations. As Mahler Foundation, we will thank all charitable Friends with some special gifts, as well as their names printed inside the concert booklets and on our website. We’d also wish to meet you in Bolzano/Bozen, together with our young musicians, at the musical events planned during the courses.

Certain of your approval, we add bank details asking you to describe the donation with the reason “Adopt a Musician - charitable contribution”.

Results of 2015 call of the Creative Europe program

The European Commission has made public the results of 2015 call of the Creative Europe program, publishing them on the EACEA website
https://eacea.ec.europa.eu/creative-europe/selection-results/cooperation-projects-selection-results-2015_en

The European Commission has approved the SPREAD Project, an idea of the Foundation Gustav Mahler of Bolzano, and for the first time in South Tyrol, a local institution has been appointed as Project Leader in a European cooperation project.

www.spreadproject.eu

SPREAD project intends to set up a transnational network of 4 main European organizations located in Italy, UK, Austria, Germany, engaged to provide an excellent and extremely diverse form of high musical education and performances to young talented classical musicians, by jointly exposing them to master classes with internationally renowned musicians with different musical backgrounds, to large symphonic orchestra, to chamber orchestra, to chamber music as well as to internships with some of Europe’s finest professional ensembles.

The network wants to help them to become the best orchestra musicians of the future.

This will happen within 19 months. Main activities will be: auditions for selection of musicians all over Europe; master classes for the selected musicians with opportunity to rehearse and perform as soloists, in chamber music, in chamber orchestra and in symphony orchestra (transnational exhibitions); audience development activities (playing concerts in unexpected locations, engaging on a One to One level with university students, involving them in the process of rehearsing a work of chamber music); communication and dissemination tools and actions (at local, national and European level).

Main target groups will be young classical musicians up to 27 years old, cultural professionals dealing with classical music, general citizens as the result of the audience development strategies adopted, with a special care for young people not skilled in classical music.

Expected results will be: increased skills and expertise of young classical musicians opening to new professional opportunities; international consolidation of organizations involved in the classical music sector; raised awareness on the creative field that classical music could represent as a common European heritage; increase number of young musicians interested at making the same path of the ones in SPREAD; visibility to new and flexible business models for chamber music and orchestras.

The project was chosen by the European commission out of 476 applications from the whole European Union, together with other 63 projects.

The number of application coming from Italy were 101, and just 9 of them has been approved.

We are sure Claudio Abbado would be proud of it.

Crowdfunding 2014 - Ten spots at the Bolzano Gustav Mahler Academy

Make a donation in support Europe’s musical hopefuls!

In recent decades the city of Bolzano has played a critical role, together with Claudio Abbado, in the history of the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra as a result of its Music and Youth concert series. It was thus only logical 16 years ago to set up an academy in this city, in order to help young musicians make the jump from youth orchestras to the top professional orchestras, through fine-tuning their craft in the context of chamber music and by playing in orchestral ensembles.

The Gustav Mahler Academy is a breeding ground for exceptional talent located in heart of Europe. As part of the BOLZANO FESTIVAL BOZEN, the current Music and Youth sponsor, we would like to further develop this legacy and to continue, in memory of Claudio Abbado, to strengthen support of Europe’s outstanding musical talents. Using an innovative grassroots tool for cultural funding called crowdfunding, we would like to allow ten additional young musicians from all over Europe to participate in the 16th Gustav Mahler Academy, the work of which culminates in a concert under the baton of Daniel Harding.

Mahler Academy 2014 (21.07 - 04.08)

The Gustav Mahler Academy offers master classes with internationally renowned teachers.
This year's Academy will focus almost exclusively on the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. During individual lessons, in chamber music and in the orchestra, which will be conducted by Daniel Harding, we want to take a very close look at works from all of Beethoven's three main creative periods. We hope for the students to come away with a strong stylistic and historic understanding of the characteristics of his music.

Deadline for registration: May 15, 2014.

CLAUDIO ABBADO (1933-2014)

The Gustav Mahler Academy mourns the death of its honorary president, Maestro Claudio Abbado. He was an artist and human being of immense value, a rare and extraordinary musician as well as
an extremely thoughtful and steadfast man, who recognized in Bolzano, and in the city’s role as a cultural crossroads, a place to realize a dream: to merge human and artistic experiences that are vastly different yet, through the universality of musical language, create the ideal environment for a European-scale educational project.

This experience has brought young talent from all over Europe together with great figures of contemporary music. Young models of industriousness, enthusiasm and commitment who, in their research work and collaborative efforts, go beyond individual egotism in the name of a unique message of understanding and a shared willingness to build.

The music, these youths and the art of a great master have all served the ideals of brotherhood and of the transcendence of borders, of interests, of nationalism – a shining example of foresight.

Claudio Abbado has generously bequeathed this precious heritage to our city. In the future, Bolzano will strive to live up to his example.

Thank you, Maestro

City Councillor Patrizia Trincanato

President of the Gustav Mahler Foundation

THE PRESIDENT OF THE ITALIAN REPUBLIC PRESENT THE GUSTAV MAHLER ACADEMY 2010 WITH AN AWARD.

For this 12th edition, once again the President of the Italian Republic presented the Gustav Mahler Academy with an award. This award comes at the end of an itinerary that began in 2008, the year in which the Head of State formally acknowledged the tenth edition of the courses by sending his message of appreciation and of good luck. In 2009, the President of the Republic awarded a silver plaque for the courses’ 11th edition and finally, in 2010 he awarded the institution with two medals forged at the State mint. In agreement with the Italian Republic’s Presidency, one medal will be donated by the Mahler foundation to a pupil who marked the history of the Academy, and so in 2010 this prize will go to the solo violoncellist Solène Kermarrec. Since her attendance at the Mahler Academy, in 2004 and 2005, the young musician quickly became a star with a brilliant career before her, considering that today she is in the group of violoncellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker, which she joined at the very young age of 23 after winning many prizes in international competitions.

Andrea LiponiThe closing concert of the Gustav Mahler Academy, to be held on 23 October 2009 at the Bolzano Auditorium, is dedicated to Andrea Liponi, with the hope that yet another musical message offered by young musicians of the same age as Andrea may help keep up public attention in the case. Andrea Liponi is a 23-year old from Bolzano, a student of linguistic mediation at the University of Trento, proficient in both German and English. He left everything and disappeared on 8 June 2008, at Sirmiano (Nalles, a village near Bolzano). In the two days after his disappearance he was seen by several people who knew him. The appeal to whoever meets him is to help him return to his family, who loves him enormously!

A silver plaque presented by the Italian President, Giorgio Napolitano, to the Gustav Mahler Academy.
The 2008 edition of the master class was held by the Gustav Mahler Academy with the "support of the President of the Republic". This year, the 11th Edition of the courses - from 4th to 24th October 2009 - has received a prestigious award: the President, in fact, has sent a silver plaque "to honour the music teaching programme implemented by the Academy in 2009", in acknowledgement of the high quality of its teaching and training activities.
The eleventh edition of the music master class will once again bring together, in Bolzano, several among the top music teachers in Italy and Europe, who will lecture about fifty young classical music talents.
